Living in Good Conscience: A Daylong for Young Adults

All the great spiritual teachings state that the foundation for true happiness is non-harming. "Thou shalt not kill" is one of the Ten Commandments. In Buddhism the first precept is to refrain from killing. If we want inner peace, having respect and reverence for life is not a lofty spiritual ideal, but practical advice to create the best conditions for that peace to arise. Yet our culture so often justifies and even glorifies killing. Young people who are trained and taught to be efficient killers pay the highest price: a lifetime of haunting memories and remorse. Our collective society as a whole is a victim as well in this tragic cycle perpetuating fear, hatred and harm.

This daylong will investigate the theme of non-harming through inspiring presentations, interactive practices and quiet reflection around the use of and response to violent action.
